Vaar (weekday)

Vaar is the weekday, the simplest limb of the panchang. The Hindu day runs from sunrise to sunrise, so the weekday changes at dawn, not at midnight.

The seven vaars

Ravivar (Sunday), Somvar (Monday), Mangalvar (Tuesday), Budhvar (Wednesday), Guruvar (Thursday), Shukravar (Friday) and Shanivar (Saturday). Each is ruled by a planet, in the same order as the Western week.

Why the day begins at sunrise

In the Hindu calendar a day is counted from one sunrise to the next. An event at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday by the clock still belongs to Monday’s vaar. This matters for fasts kept on a weekday, for Rahu kaal, whose position depends on the weekday, and for the choghadiya sequence, which starts with the weekday’s lord at sunrise.

Weekdays in muhurat

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are considered favourable for most beginnings. Tuesday is avoided for many events, Saturday for others, and Sunday for a few such as griha pravesh. Hastro’s muhurat rules carry these lists per event.

FAQ

Which weekday is best for buying a vehicle?

Most lists favour Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and avoid Tuesday and Saturday.

Why does the weekday change at sunrise on Hastro’s calendar?

Because that is the traditional definition. The calendar grid still follows the civil date so you can find things, but every computation uses the sunrise-to-sunrise day.
