Rahu Kaal

Rahu Kaal is a daily period of about ninety minutes, one-eighth of the day, ruled by Rahu and avoided for new beginnings. Its position depends on the weekday.

How Rahu Kaal is calculated

The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts. Rahu Kaal is one of those parts, chosen by the weekday: the second part on Monday, seventh on Tuesday, fifth on Wednesday, sixth on Thursday, fourth on Friday, third on Saturday and eighth on Sunday. Because it is tied to the actual sunrise and sunset, it shifts through the year and differs from city to city; the familiar “7:30 to 9:00 on Monday” is only true for a twelve-hour day.

What is avoided

Starting a journey, a purchase, a new venture, a ceremony or a signing during Rahu Kaal is discouraged. Routine and already-running work is not affected, and in South India the rule is followed more strictly than in the North.

Hastro’s muhurat finder excludes any window that overlaps Rahu Kaal outright; the panchang page shows the exact times for your location.

FAQ

Is Rahu Kaal the same everywhere?

No. It is computed from your local sunrise and sunset, so two cities on the same weekday have different Rahu Kaal times.

Can I begin something if Rahu Kaal ends halfway through?

The convention is to wait for it to end. Hastro’s windows are cut to avoid any overlap.
