What Purnima is

Purnima is the fifteenth tithi of Shukla Paksha, running from the moment the Moon is 168° ahead of the Sun until it is exactly 180° away. The full moon rises at sunset and stays up all night.

Festivals on Purnima

Holi (Phalguna), Hanuman Jayanti (Chaitra), Buddha Purnima (Vaishakha), Guru Purnima (Ashadha), Raksha Bandhan (Shravana), Sharad Purnima (Ashwina) and Kartik Purnima all fall on the full moon. Satyanarayan puja is commonly done on any Purnima, and many keep a monthly Purnima vrat.

FAQ

Is Purnima good for muhurat?

It is acceptable for many events, though griha pravesh lists usually exclude it. Hastro’s rules follow the event-specific lists.

Why is the moon sometimes full a day after Purnima?

The tithi and the moment of maximum illumination coincide, but the day carrying the tithi is decided at sunrise, so the fullest moon can be seen the following evening.
