Meaning and dates
Pitru Paksha, also called Mahalaya or Shraddha Paksha, is the dark fortnight of Ashwina in the purnimanta reckoning, Bhadrapada in the amanta. It opens with the Purnima Shraddha and closes on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the day of shraddha for all ancestors whose tithi is unknown. The dates for the current year, computed for your city, are shown above.
What is done
On each tithi of the fortnight, families whose forebears died on that tithi offer pinda and tarpan, feed brahmins and the poor, and give to crows, cows and dogs. Ashtami, Navami (for mothers) and Amavasya draw the most observances. The following day, Ashwina Shukla Pratipada, begins Sharad Navratri.
What is avoided
Weddings, griha pravesh, vehicle and property purchase, new ventures and other celebrations are held back for the fortnight, since the period belongs to the ancestors. Hastro’s muhurat finder excludes Pitru Paksha for every event and says so in the report.
FAQ
Can I buy a car during Pitru Paksha?
Tradition says wait for Navratri; most published vehicle-muhurat lists have no dates in this fortnight, and Hastro follows them.
What if I do not know the death tithi?
Perform the shraddha on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, which covers all ancestors.
Is it a bad or inauspicious time?
It is a solemn one, set aside for remembrance rather than celebration. Daily work continues.
