Muhurat

A muhurat is a chosen time for beginning something, picked so that the tithi, nakshatra, weekday and hour are favourable and the prohibited periods are avoided. Hastro computes muhurats per event and per city and shows every reason.

How a muhurat is chosen

Traditional muhurat works (Muhurta Chintamani, Dharmasindhu and regional almanacs) ask several questions in order. First, is the period allowed at all: not Chaturmas, Pitru Paksha, Kharmas, Holashtak or an adhik month for the events that forbid them. Then, is the day allowed: a favourable tithi and nakshatra for the event, an acceptable weekday, no Bhadra or Panchak where they matter. Finally, is the hour allowed: outside Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika, in an auspicious choghadiya or Abhijit, with a suitable sign rising (fixed or dual signs for a house entry, movable ones for travel), and, for a person, with good tara bala and chandra bala from the birth star.

How Hastro applies this

Each event (griha pravesh, vehicle purchase, business opening, mundan, namakaran, engagement, travel) has its own rule file listing the favourable and forbidden tithis, nakshatras, weekdays and months. The prohibited periods are exclusions: they are never traded off against good factors, and if a whole range is excluded the report says so and why. The remaining daytime windows are scored: 50 is neutral, every favourable factor adds its weight, every dosha subtracts, and the sum is scaled so that 100 means every favourable factor is present. The reasons and the exact formula are printed with every result.

FAQ

Why does Hastro show no muhurat for my dates?

Because the whole range falls in an excluded period for that event, most often Chaturmas or Pitru Paksha. The report names the period; choose dates after it.

Are these muhurats personalised?

With a saved birth chart, tara bala and chandra bala from your Moon are added. Without one, the muhurats are general.

Do Hastro’s muhurats match Drik Panchang?

The exclusions and favourable lists follow the same conventions, and the astronomy agrees to seconds. Regional almanacs differ among themselves on borderline days; Hastro prints its rules so you can see which convention applied.
