Gulika Kaal
Gulika Kaal is the daily portion ruled by Gulika (Mandi), Saturn's son, one-eighth of the day by weekday. Work begun in it is said to repeat itself, so it is avoided for most events.
How it is calculated
Divide the time between sunrise and sunset into eight parts. Gulika Kaal is the seventh on Sunday, sixth on Monday, fifth on Tuesday, fourth on Wednesday, third on Thursday, second on Friday and first on Saturday. There is also a night Gulika, counted from sunset.
In practice
The saying is that whatever is done in Gulika Kaal happens again, so it is avoided for things you do not want to repeat: a funeral, a debt, an illness’s treatment. By the same logic a few traditions choose it deliberately for things they want to recur. In Kerala the exact Gulika time is worked out for horoscopes as the position of Mandi.
