Gandmool nakshatra

Gandmool refers to six nakshatras at the junctions of the zodiac: Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Revati. A birth in them traditionally calls for a Mool Shanti ritual.

Which nakshatras

The six sit at the boundaries where a water sign meets a fire sign: Ashlesha–Magha, Jyeshtha–Mula and Revati–Ashwini. Each is ruled by Mercury or Ketu. Because the Moon crosses a sign boundary within them, they are called gand (junction) mool (root) nakshatras.

Birth in Gandmool

A child born with the Moon in one of these is said to be in Gandmool, and a shanti puja is performed, traditionally when the Moon returns to the same nakshatra 27 days later. The severity is judged by the pada; some quarters are held harmless.

In the panchang

Hastro marks the Gandmool windows of each day. Muhurat rules for mundan and namakaran penalise them; other events ignore them.
