Meaning and dates

The word joins chatur (four) and masa (months). Chaturmas begins on Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi, called Devshayani or Hari Shayani, when Vishnu enters his cosmic sleep on Shesha in the ocean of milk, and ends on Kartika Shukla Ekadashi, Dev Uthani or Prabodhini, when he wakes. The four lunar months in between are Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwina and Kartika; in a year with an adhik month the period stretches to five.

What is observed

It is a season of restraint: many give up a food for the four months, keep the Ekadashi fasts more strictly, read the Bhagavata or Ramayana, and give in charity. Monks stop travelling and stay in one place, the origin of the Jain and Buddhist rains retreat.

What is avoided

Marriage, engagement, griha pravesh, mundan, upanayana and starting a major construction are not undertaken in Chaturmas, because the deity who sanctifies such beginnings is resting. The season’s festivals themselves, Guru Purnima, Nag Panchami, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali, all fall inside it and are of course celebrated.

Hastro’s muhurat finder treats Chaturmas as an exclusion for griha pravesh, engagement and mundan: for such dates it reports that no conventional muhurat exists rather than offering a fallback. Vehicle purchase, business opening and travel are not restricted by Chaturmas in most lists.

Conventional muhurat lists say no. Some families perform a simple entry with a puja and keep the formal griha pravesh for after Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

Is Chaturmas the same in every region?

The period is the same; the fasting customs differ. Maharashtra and Gujarat keep it prominently, the South marks it with the Ekadashi fasts and Kartika observances.
