Yamaganda
Yamaganda is a daily one-eighth-of-day period associated with Yama and avoided for auspicious beginnings, alongside Rahu Kaal and Gulika Kaal.
How it is calculated
As with Rahu Kaal, the daytime is divided into eight parts and Yamaganda is one of them, by weekday: the fifth on Sunday, fourth on Monday, third on Tuesday, second on Wednesday, first on Thursday, seventh on Friday and sixth on Saturday. It falls in the morning or early afternoon on every day except Friday and Saturday.
In practice
Yamaganda is treated as less severe than Rahu Kaal; many families avoid it for travel and rituals but not for everyday work. Hastro shows it on the panchang and lets each event’s rule decide whether it is excluded or penalised.

Rahu Kaal is avoided more strictly. Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal are secondary; some traditions treat Gulika as favourable for a few purposes.
