What Sankashti Chaturthi is

Every Krishna Paksha Chaturthi is Sankashti Chaturthi, a day of fasting for Ganesha to remove obstacles. Devotees fast through the day and end it at night after seeing the moon, so the panchang must show the moonrise time for the place.

When it falls on a Tuesday it is called Angarki Chaturthi and is considered the most powerful of the year. The Shukla Paksha Chaturthi, kept without the moon-sighting rule, is Vinayaka Chaturthi.

Which day is chosen

The day on which Chaturthi prevails at moonrise is the fasting day. Since the moon rises about 50 minutes later each evening, Hastro computes the moonrise for your city and applies the rule there.

FAQ

What if it is cloudy and the moon cannot be seen?

The fast is broken at the computed moonrise time. Hastro lists moonrise on the panchang page for that reason.

Why is Angarki special?

Tradition associates Ganesha with the planet Mars (Angaraka), so a Sankashti on Mars’s day, Tuesday, is treated as one observance worth the whole year’s.
