The rules

Months: Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Magha and Phalguna are best; Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwina and Pausha are avoided, which with Chaturmas rules out most of July to November. Kharmas (Sun in Dhanu or Meena), Pitru Paksha, Holashtak and adhik months are excluded outright.

Tithis: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi of either paksha; Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi, Amavasya and Purnima are avoided.

Nakshatras: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. Pushya is accepted by some traditions but not by the mainstream lists, so Hastro leaves it out.

Weekdays: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; Tuesday and Sunday are avoided.

Hour: outside Rahu Kaal and Bhadra, in an Amrit, Shubh or Labh choghadiya, or in Abhijit.

Three kinds of entry

Apoorva, the first entry into a newly built house, follows the full rules. Sapoorva, returning to a home after a long absence, and Dwandva, entry after repairs or a calamity, are treated more leniently.

FAQ

Why does Hastro show no griha pravesh muhurat for September?

Because September falls in Chaturmas and Bhadrapada, both excluded. Conventional calendars also list none; the next dates come after Dev Uthani Ekadashi in Kartika.

Can the puja be done in the evening?

The entry is traditionally made in daylight, and Hastro’s windows are daytime. The vastu shanti puja can be scheduled separately.
