What Ekadashi is
Ekadashi falls twice in every lunar month, once in Shukla Paksha and once in Krishna Paksha, giving 24 in a year and 26 in a year with an adhik month. Each has a name and a story: Nirjala Ekadashi in Jyeshtha is kept without water; Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha begins Chaturmas, and Dev Uthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi in Kartika ends it.
How the fasting day is chosen
The fast is kept on the day Ekadashi prevails at sunrise. When the tithi spans two sunrises, the second day is taken, so that no trace of Dashami touches the fast (the vriddhi rule). Smarta and Vaishnava traditions can differ by a day in some months; Hastro follows the sunrise rule with the second-day preference.
Parana, breaking the fast, is done the next morning after sunrise, ideally before Dwadashi ends and outside Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi.
FAQ
What may be eaten on Ekadashi?
Grains and beans are given up. Fruit, milk, nuts and preparations from sabudana, kuttu or singhara are common. The strictest form, Nirjala, takes nothing at all.
Why does my calendar show Ekadashi on a different day from a friend’s?
Either a different city (sunrise changes the day) or a different tradition (Smarta versus Vaishnava). Check the tithi end time on the panchang page.
